New MA Headlight Law

A new law requiring headlights and taillights to be kept on when windshield wipers are used goes into effect for all Massachusetts motorists on Tuesday, officials said.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation said the law is intended to increase safety and visibility of vehicles on the road. The changes to Massachusetts General Law Chapter 85, Section 15 were signed into law in January, the department said. The law requires that headlights and taillights be turned on when windshield wipers are on, when low light or weather conditions prevent other vehicles or people from being seen at 500 feet, and a half-hour after sunset and a half-hour before sunrise.

Violating the law is considered a minor motor vehicle traffic law violation.
